Qi Gong (Chee-gong) is an ancient Chinese moving meditation you can practice to boost energy, relieve stress, and balance your emotions. It focuses on holistic health or “whole being” health by addressing all of who you are: mind, body, and spirit.
What is Qi Gong? | Discover the Power of Qi with Holden QiGong
Personally, I have found Qi Gong to be the best underpinning practice for my wellbeing. It is known to be particularly helpful for seniors, as well as those with hypermobility spectrum disorders. But it can benefit anyone.
Tai Chi and Qi Gong Research
Recent Study Shows Tai Chi Outperforms Traditional Exercise for People Over 50
In a February 2024 Harvard-backed study*, researchers examined 12 Tai Chi studies involving 2,091 participants.
According to the research team, “New research review and analysis shows that Tai Chi can indeed induce greater improvement in functional mobility and balance in relatively healthy older adults compared to conventional exercise.”
The researchers also found that across the studies, the most effective practices were focused on the Yang-style Tai Chi form.
It’s not just Harvard… AARP and Mayo Clinic also agree that the #1 recommended exercise for people over 50 is Tai Chi and Qi Gong.
250 million people practice Tai Chi daily to stay fit, healthy, and active.

I am gathering together here links to key sites and practices.
Although I did learn Tai Chi back in my forties, most of my learning has been via Holden Qi Gong. I find Lee Holden refreshingly unpretentious and his courses clear and helpful. I like that you can engage on many levels. I started with a commitment of around seven minutes a day, using the 30-Day Challenge routines. I try now to do at least 2o minutes, with longer sessions once or twice a week. I have chosen to focus on Buddha Palm in 2024/25, which is essentially energy healing. I would love to delve more deeply into the spiritual aspects – there was a course linking Qi Gong to the Tao Te Ching that I would love to have been able to make time for. There are also live-stream subscriptions available, as well as periodic free events and course introductions. The website and blog posts are very informative.
